Response to Poem

PLEASE FOCUS ON SECTIONS 1, 21, 24, 30, 33, AND 52

Walt Whitman is known as a poet who revolutionized poetry–he was one of the first to use free verse poetry–poetry that does not need to use a particular pattern of rhymes and sounds, nor length.  Free verse means that the poet has the freedom to write the poem in any structure and form that he/she wishes.

Whitman is also known as a poet who valued freedom and democracy.

Please discuss what imagery, metaphors, and lines in the poem remind you of or relate to freedom.  Please be specific/quote from the poem, and explain why the examples that you have chosen connect to freedom.

Please also discuss what themes you find most important in the poem/the sections that I have asked you to read here.

Please again choose quotes from the poem that are examples of these themes.
