Reader Response

TOPIC:

This assignment will differ from your previous essays in that, instead of a close critical analysis, you will be writing a more open response to one of the selections from the course, showing how that work of literature connected to you on a personal level. Feel free to choose from ANY selection from the units on short fiction, poetry, or drama.

GUIDELINES:

Include a properly formatted title of your own creation that relates in some way to the content of your paper.

Start with an Introduction that 1) includes the title and author of the work of literature you are writing about, 2) gives a brief explanation of your interest in your choice, and 3) states your main idea or thesis about the selection and how it connects to you.

In the Body of your essay: 1) Summarize the aspect of the work that you connected with. Limit your summary to one or two paragraphs at the most.  Do not give a detailed retelling of the entire plot of the story, play, or poem.  2) The longest part of your essay (several paragraphs, at least) will explain the personal connection that you made with the work of literature, placing it into the context of your own thoughts, feelings, and experience.

Write a Conclusion that puts your reading experience in perspective. What did the selection mean to you? What are your final thoughts on the topic?

Include a properly formatted Work Cited entry for the chosen selection at the end of your paper.

Your essay must be typed, double-spaced, and about 500-750 words in length. Include a single-spaced heading in the left-hand corner of the first page that includes the following:
