FedEx has an incredible A.I-powered project in place – Roxo, which is an entirely autonomous robot making same-day deliveries.

There is a lot of advanced software and hardware components that make Roxo functional. ‘Pattern recognition’ is arguably the most important one. In order to navigate the busy streets, Roxo needs to be able to detect and recognize a huge number of real-life objects. Some of these objects are in motion too. The ‘detection’ part is being worked on by creating more and more advanced sensors. The ‘recognition’ part requires a huge amount of data in order for Roxo to learn through self-exploration, guided by a collection of well-written machine learning algorithms.

We sometimes take our pattern-recognition abilities for granted, because we can easily do something like navigating a busy street or putting a box on someone’s doorstep or in someone’s mailbox. But it’s actually an incredibly complex skill when we break it down. Building a delivery robot like Roxo requires software engineers to create Roxo’s ‘brain’ from the ground up, with the support of massive datasets and complicated ML algorithms.

A same-day delivery robot like Roxo makes the ‘last-mile delivery’ a lot more efficient, saves a lot of human effort, and significantly reduces human errors.

I researched McDonald’s supply chain management system. It is one of the most effective dependable supply chain management systems in the world (Maze, 2017). Because of its system’s success, many other franchises have copied McDonald’s supply chain management. McDonald's optimizes its supply chain by simplifying and consolidating the supply chain processes with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) for big data analysis. McDonald's also automates the end-to-end workflow of the supply chain (Young, 2006). There are five main components in McDonald’s supply chain. The first two are the two tiers of suppliers. The first tier is the farmers who grow crops like lettuce, potato, and even poultry. The second tier of suppliers includes those that process the food.

For example, Coke Cola supplies Coke for McDonald's. Then, there are inbound transportation, a distribution center, and outbound transportation before food is delivered to each McDonald's restaurant. McDonald's acquired a technology company to customize its supply chain infrastructure at all levels. A specific example is the automation of inventory management. Big data analysis with AI can enable an individual McDonald's restaurant to avoid running out of popular products. Especially when special circumstance, like a big rain, takes place, the automation of supply chain management can make sure those popular products are delivered before the rain starts.
