· Discussion OverviewThis week you discuss applied research and an applied research topic that you will write about in your Week 7 assignment.

· Quiz OverviewYou will complete a 10-question quiz on the course concepts covered this week.

· What You Need to KnowApplied PsychologyIn contrast to basic research, which seeks to gain knowledge, the goal of applied research is to solve real-world problems by building application of the knowledge into the research itself. For example, applied research looks for answers to questions such as How do decision-making opportunities on the job promote job motivation? Can listening to music improve health? Whereas basic research might study motivations for risky teenage sexual behavior, applied research might study an intervention for its effectiveness in reducing risky teenage sexual behavior. The question about music gives Keisha an idea. She recalls how difficult it was for her daughter to learn her multiplication tables last year. She was only able to concentrate when Keisha put on her daughter's favorite music. Could listening to music improve a child's ability to study and learn? Keisha just figured out her project's research question! After this week, you will be able to recognize the application of psychology at work all around you. You will be able to use your knowledge to improve conditions in your environment.
