Journal/Question Set Wk 7

The journal reflection and question set is designed to help students make connections between concepts from module to module.  Often, in order to make these connections, it is necessary to look at emerging research.

Instructions

Read the article Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: An Evidence-Based Approach to Reducing Metabolic Consequences (Ruby, 2008) before completing the question set.

Question Set

There is no minimum or maximum length expectation for this portion of the assignment.  I expect you to communicate as concisely as possible, and recognize that this will require different lengths of responses for each individual.

1. Ruby (2008) refers to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) as being an endocrine-metabolic disorder.  What is meant by this, and what clinical evidence supports this characterization?

2. Think back to Module 2.  What significance might an elevated CRP have in discussing metabolic consequences of PCOS?

3. What does the advantage of metformin over oral contraceptives (described on pages 701 and 702) tell us about the nature of PCOS?

Reflection Prompt

The author refers to lifestyle interventions numerous times throughout the article.  Given what you now know about PCOS, what are some lifestyle modifications you would recommend to a woman diagnosed with PCOS?  Be specific: an answer of exercise is not considered specific.  What impact might social and environmental determinants of health have on a womans ability to make lifestyle modifications?  Respond to the reflection prompt in at least two paragraphs, but no longer than 1.5 pages****.
