This assignment asks to consider materials that have already covered ancient Greek heroes and your own knowledge of modern conceptions of heroes in comparison. Read all the way to the end for the assignment questions. You will submit three (3) paragraphs in response to specific questions. Your responses should be well-considered and supported by details.

Think about the differences in the ways the ancient Greeks and we in 21st century USA conceive of heroes. What makes a hero in ancient Greek mythology? Do we value those same things in our modern heroes?

Address each of the following questions in a short paragraph using specific details from Greek hero mythology and the history/narrative associated with your selected modern hero.

Using a couple (2 max.) ancient Greek heroes provide a synopsis (in a paragraph) of the characteristics of an ancient Greek hero. Think about what the myths tells us about ancient Greek expectations for their heroes.
Chose someone you identify as a hero in our own, modern culture. You will have to decide if you are going to choose a real person (e.g. MLK or Gandhi) or a fictional hero (e.g. Batman or Superman) – either is fine, but choose one. What makes this individual heroic in our modern culture? Use specific details from the life/narrative of your selected hero to support your identification of this individual as a modern hero. Compose your answer to these questions in a paragraph.
Compare your modern hero to the ancient Greek heroes you discussed in the first question. How are they similar? How do they differ? What might these similarities/differences say about our culture in comparison to ancient Greek culture? Compose your answer to these questions in a paragraph.
